Record label executive, producer, songwriter and artiste Larry Gaaga has been appointed Def Jam Africa’s Vice President, A&R. He will report to the CEO of Universal Music South Africa & Sub-Saharan Africa, Sipho Dlamini.
The company says Gaaga will lead the A&R department in Africa’s English-speaking markets. He alongside his team will strive to identify and sign talents across the continent that “speaks to and resonates with the defining culture and artistry of the Def Jam legacy.”
Def Jam Africa is the home to African emcees and artistes such as Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Tellaman, Nadia Nakai, Tshego, and Ricky Tyler.
Gaaga started his music journey at YSG Entertainment in 2010, later becoming the General Manager of the same label. Over the years, Gaaga has released singles with top artistes across Africa; Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, 2Baba, and many more.
Sipho Dlamini said: “Larry is a talented creative, astute A&R and strategic executive, expanding his relationship with Def Jam is an exciting next step in Africa’s hip hop story and a big move for the culture.”
