A Los Angeles judge sentenced rapper Tory Lanez to 10 years in prison on Tuesday for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet in 2020.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty by a jury in December 2022 on three felony charges stemming from the incident that happened after they attended a party at Kylie Jenner’s house in Hollywood Hills, California.
Lanez fired at Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, as she was walking away from his SUV on July 12, 2020. She sustained multiple gunshot injuries and required surgery.
Megan Thee Stallion publicly accused Lanez of being the shooter a day later on Instagram Live, and later testified against him in court. She also submitted a letter to the judge that was read by the prosecutor at the sentencing hearing, describing how Lanez hurt her physically and emotionally and tried to ruin her reputation.
“He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma. He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul,” she wrote. “He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media.”
Lanez addressed the court briefly before the judge announced his sentence, saying he still cared about Megan Thee Stallion and calling her his “friend,” even though she might not feel the same way about him.
Judge David Herriford said he took into account more than 70 letters from Lanez’s family and supporters, including from fellow musician Iggy Azalea, but also emphasized the gravity of the offense and the harm it caused to the victim.
He sentenced Lanez to 10 years in prison, which was three years lower than what the prosecutors had asked for. He also ordered Lanez to pay $5,000 in restitution to Megan Thee Stallion and $1,000 in fines.
Lanez will be deported to Canada, his home country, after serving his sentence. He will also be banned from owning or possessing any firearms for life.
