Deezer Launches ‘Playlist with AI’ Feature in Beta

Earlier in April this year, Spotify launched a beta test of its ‘AI Playlist’ feature. This feature creates playlists based on listeners’ text prompts. Deezer has shown interest in this feature with its Playlist with AI feature. This feature like Spotify’s is in beta test.

The company announced the beta users were “selected at random.” The selected users amounted to 5% of its global paying subscribers and will get access to the new AI-driven feature. These users can type in moods, genres, decades, activities and other keywords as prompts to spawn playlists. The feature sits alongside Deezer’s existing uses of AI technologies including its Flow Mix and SongCatcher search option.

Prompt-driven playlists feel like a new, buzzy feature at this point in 2024. A splash of ChatGPT-style innovation applied to music discovery.

However, with YouTube Music also testing a prompt-based AI radio feature, this kind of thing seems set to become commodified as a standard, expected feature for streaming services.

The differentiator will be how smart their AIs are at understanding those prompts and serving up music that matches the listener’s request.
