Laycon has always been known for his lyrical ability, and his latest tracks see him blend that with the demands of the ever-growing popularity of Afrobeats.
“Shine” is a song about working hard and overcoming obstacles on the path to your goals. Laycon actually sings on this track, which is a pleasant surprise for his fans. The tune is danceable and features a catchy hook.
“LOL” is a tribute to the giants who have come before Laycon in the Nigerian music industry. He doesn’t call names, but he nods to these artists with elements synonymous with them, such as “Verify” and “Made in Lagos.” It’s a melody you can lose yourself to, and there’s a sax solo that adds a nice touch. There are times when I forget this song is playing, and my body is moving.
As always, the production quality is top-notch, and Laycon’s lyrical ability shines on both tracks. “Shine” and “LOL” mark a new direction for the artist, and it’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.
