According to Midia’s “large-scale, a global survey of independent labels, collecting billions of dollars worth of revenue,” to discover a new perspective on indie labels’ revenue contributions.

The conclusion is that the current distribution system garble’s the real picture and that global indie label revenue is 9% higher than when considered on a ‘label ownership’ basis; who holds the copyrights and not who distributes.

Previous data by Midia showed that major labels’ market share of 66.1% is inflated by indie labels revenue that uses major label-owned distribution platforms; this data was reported as those of Major labels’ copyright share data.

The new indie label market share is now at 43.1%; an additional $2.1 billion on the indie label and artist table. This backs up the claim of power slowly creeping on the independent music business side.
